Frequently Asked Questions

How does laser hair removal work?

Hair removal lasers work by utilizing a concentrated beam of light that is absorbed by the hair’s pigment. The absorption of light damages the follicle, which slows or prevents future growth. The darker the hair, the more effective the treatment. This is why patients with gray hair, blonde hair, or red hair are not ideal candidates.

Additionally, it is important to understand that hair grows in a cycle of four phases: active/growing (anagen), dormant/regression (catagen), shedding (exogen), and resting (telogen). Every hair is at a different stage within the growth cycle. A laser can only affect the follicles that are in the active/growing (anagen) phase. Because it is impossible to know what phase your hair is in, multiple treatment sessions are necessary.

How often do I have to come in for laser hair reduction treatments?
  • Facial hair - every 4-6 weeks
  • Body hair - every 6-8 weeks

Treatments need to be done in a consistent manner until advised otherwise.

Does removing unwanted hair hurt?

Your laser treatment will feel like a “rubber band snap” or “heat sensation.” The degree of the discomfort is comparable to waxing. Our Gentlelase Pro-U is equipped with the state-of-the-art Dynamic Cooling Device (DCD), which delivers controlled, cooling bursts of cryogen that make each treatment more comfortable.

The use of an anesthetic (numbing) cream is optional. The cream should be applied 45 minutes prior to your treatment and covered with Saran wrap for maximal effect. Please ask a member of our reception desk for a prescription.

*Safety considerations are important during the laser procedure. You and all personnel in the treatment suite will wear protective eyewear during the procedure to prevent damage to the eye. Additionally, due to laser fumes and protective eyewear requirements, children are not permitted in the treatment suite.

What should I expect after treatment? Are there any restrictions?

Immediately after treatment, there may be redness and swelling at the treated site, which may last 1-3 days.

The treated area may feel like a sunburn for a few hours after treatment.

It is normal to feel some itching of the treated area for a few days after treatment since laser can cause dryness of the skin. Should the itching persist for more than 3 days, call the office. If you experience this, avoid scratching the area and apply a moisturizing cream or ointment that is free of perfume, such as Aquaphor.

Make-up may be used a few hours after the treatment.

Avoid sun exposure after your treatment to reduce the chance of skin discoloration. Use sunscreen (SPF 35 or greater) when exposed to direct sunlight.

It takes anywhere from one to two weeks after treatment for the burnt hairs to fall off. Shedding of the treated hair may appear as hair growth during this time. You can remove the hair by scrubbing the area with a wet cloth or Loofa sponge. Also, please keep in mind that in a first-time treated area, the hair may not fall out completely as multiple treatments are needed.

Some individuals may develop a rash or skin “breakout” after the laser treatment. If this occurs, please use over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream and notify our office if it does not resolve.

What if I experience any side effects or some hairs are missed?
  • Call the office at (818) 500-0823 with any questions or concerns that you may have after the treatment. It is very important that you notify us if there are any signs of skin blistering or discoloration so we can prescribe appropriate medication and modify your future treatments.
  • If you received a subsequent, full area treatment and a “patch” of missed hair is still present after all other hair has shed, you may call our office for a possible 5-minute “touch-up” treatment. A “touch-up” treatment is not available on “touch-up” treatments or first-time treatments and must be performed within 2 weeks after original treatment.
  • First-time visits: It is normal and important to remember that the hair may not fall out completely after your first time treating an area. Multiple treatments are needed.

PicoSure laser skin revitalization works with the body to deliver natural-looking, youthful results without harming the surrounding skin.

    Why Choose PicoSure?

What to Expect During PicoSure Wrinkle Treatments

Laser skin revitalization treatments typically take 20-30 minutes, which is dependent upon the size of the area being treated.

Usually 2-3 treatments will give you the results you desire, but it may require only one laser skin rejuvenation treatment to see results in some cases.

It is not typically considered a painful treatment, but since every patient is different, a cooling cream can be applied prior to the procedure to alleviate any discomfort.

Recovery from laser skin revitalization does not take long and usually includes some minor swelling and redness in the treated area.

    Pearl Fractional Laser

Your skin is harmed daily with exposure to pollution, extreme climates, sunlight, free radicals, and stress. The effects these factors have on your skin are only added to the never-ending battle against the natural aging process. You may put up a good fight with the use of skin care products and regular sessions with your esthetician; however, the reflection in your mirror continues to show more fine lines, wrinkles, and even age spots.

    Laser Skin Rejuvenation Treatments
Laser skin resurfacing is one of the most modern treatments available for reversing signs of aging on your face, neck, and décolleté. Pearl Fractional is a volumizing, fractional laser that offers the best combination of long lasting patient results and limited recovery time. Fractional therapy works by exposing a fraction of your skin to the precise laser beam in a pattern of tiny dots. The laser pulses place tiny holes in the skin to a controlled depth. The columns of damaged tissue are selectively removed leaving the surrounding skin intact. The precision of the laser keeps the skin protected, which helps to shorten healing time and stimulates the body’s own natural process for creating new collagen.

With only one treatment, you will see an improvement in the tone and texture, leaving you with a noticeably smoother and more youthful complexion. As time goes by, the stimulation of collagen will continue to reveal a more plumped skin structure. Final results are seen approximately 3 months after treatment.

Pearl Fractional Laser may be performed under local anesthesia, along with an oral sedative. It is also performed under general anesthesia when performed in conjunction with another procedure. Dr. Vartany will discuss the option that is best for you.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is Laser Skin Rejuvenation right for me?

If you have a light to medium skin tone and are bothered by your skin imperfections, such as wrinkles, old acne scars, or age spots, then Pearl Fractional Laser may be the right procedure for you. As with any cosmetic procedure, you should decide to do it for yourself, not to fulfill someone else’s desires or to try to fit any sort of ideal image.

    Good candidates are:

    • Healthy individuals who do not have a life-threatening illness or medical conditions that can impair healing
    • Non-smokers
    • Individuals with a positive outlook and specific goals in mind for Pearl Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing

It is important to discuss your history of cold sores with Dr. Vartany so that the correct pre-treatment protocol may be provided.

How many Pearl Fractional Laser treatments will I need?

Significant improvement is often seen after one treatment.

What areas can laser skin resurfacing treat?

Pearl Fractional can be used on the entire face and is uniquely effective in treating crow’s feet (lines around the eyes) and lines and wrinkles around the mouth. These areas often show the first signs of aging and can be the most challenging to treat. Your neck, décolleté, and even hands may also be treated.

How should I prepare for my Pearl Fractional Laser treatment?

Beginning 2 weeks prior to treatment, avoid any blood thinners, including but not limited to aspirin, Motrin®, Advil®, Excedrin®, Aleve®, or any other non-steroidal anti-inflammatories.

For patients with a history of cold sores, a prophylactic course of anti-viral medication will be prescribed.

For patients with a history of hyperpigmentation, your pre-treatment protocol will involve the application of prescription strength Hydroquinone cream to suppress melanin production. This must be applied two times a day, starting 2 weeks prior to treatment.  A Broad Spectrum sunblock must be worn daily.

Skin care products are available for purchase in our office.

How does laser skin rejuvenation treatment feel?

Most patients describe the treatment as a series of fast, hot pinches. A topical numbing cream is applied to the skin prior to treatment to alleviate discomfort. Dr. Vartany may choose to augment topical creams with other medications based on the individual patient’s need.

What can I expect during my recovery?

Immediately after treatment, your skin will look sunburned and may be slightly swollen. You may apply ice packs on the treated area(s) to help alleviate the sunburned sensation.

A topical ointment, such as Aquaphor, will need to be applied during the first 4-5 days while the skin is healing. An ointment will relieve the tightness and create an occlusive barrier to protect your compromised skin.

A Broad Spectrum sunblock needs to be applied daily once the skin has healed.

Makeup may be applied 5-7 days after treatment depending on your skin’s response.

Avoid direct and indirect sun exposure for 1 week prior to procedure and 2 weeks after procedure.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How does PicoSure™ laser tattoo removal work?

PicoSure uses advanced picosecond laser technology to effectively remove your unwanted tattoos. The PicoSure sends laser pulses lasting one trillionth of a second, 100 times faster than a nanosecond laser, deep below the surface of your skin to target the underlying ink. The laser bursts shatter the pigment into tiny particles that the body can naturally eliminate through the immune system.

What types of tattoos can be removed?

PicoSure is the best laser tattoo removal device on the market. It can treat notoriously difficult-to-remove blue and green inks as well as very dark lines. PicoSure also successfully removes recalcitrant tattoos that have previously undergone laser tattoo removal. Scheduling a consultation is the best way to learn exactly how the PicoSure can help you remove your unwanted tattoo.

How many laser treatments are required?

Generally, three to six sessions are required to completely remove a tattoo with PicoSure. Scheduling a consultation is the best way to learn how many sessions your tattoo will need to be removed. Sessions are spaced six to eight weeks apart so the body has time to naturally eliminate pigment from the body and the skin can heal. PicoSure represents a major advancement over Q-switched lasers, which often require 15-20 treatments to see comparable results.

    Are laser treatments painful?

Most people do not find laser tattoo removal painful. Some patients compare the procedure to getting a tattoo but for a much shorter duration. We can provide a topical anesthetic and use a cooling device to make the procedure more comfortable.

Will laser tattoo removal leave a scar?

PicoSure was designed to remove unwanted tattoos without damaging the surrounding skin. Although your skin may become discolored after treatment, it will fade and return to normal shortly. All skin procedures have some risk of scarring, but with the PicoSure laser, permanent skin damage is very rare. If you scar easily or develop keloids, you should discuss your concerns prior to undergoing treatment.

    What is the aftercare like?

After treatment, you can immediately resume your normal routine. Your tattoo may appear gray or frosted after treatment, but this will fade within a few hours. You should keep the affected area out of the sun and frequently apply a topical ointment like polysporin to help the skin heal. We will specify additional aftercare instructions according to your individual case.
